The Carlisle Board of Education approved a two-year contract with its teachers’ union earlier this month.
The contract is for a 1 percent raise in the first year and a 1.5 percent raise in the second year.
It was approved before the June 30 expiration of the current contract, which was a bitter negotiation which almost led to our teachers’ striking.
The new contract provides guidelines on a new retire-rehire policy and develops a system and chain of command for addressing complaints against teachers.
The contract also has language to address special-education needs and makes the special-education coordinator an administrative position.
The contract changes from paying teachers 26 biweekly payments to twice monthly, makes the three personal days they receive unrestricted and raises the maximum accumulated sick from 236 to 240 days.
It does Carlisle, Ohio well to take care of our teachers and provide them the very best benefits of salary. Teachers, as a whole, are one of the groups in society that are underpaid, unappreciated, and sometimes ridiculed by students and even parents. Carlisle teachers deserve this raise and so much more.

Wow, 1%? That's awful.
Let's see 1% raise for the teachers should mean that they have covered their 1% income tax burden due to the Carlisle School System every year but I as a TAXpayer will still have to pay my 1% income tax to the school system plus 1% more for those that got the raise in pay. SUMMARY: I pay 2% they get 1%, GEE I'm getting took again. (Message to SCHOOL BOARD) LAY off enough of those teachers now to pay for that 1% raise you just doled out.
